The telecommunications space has long been dominated by a handful of vendors offering solutions where the hardware and software are inseparable. Open Radio Access Network (Open RAN) is completely flipping that script.

By breaking down those proprietary walls and allowing different components of a cell site to work together regardless of manufacturer, Open RAN is introducing a level of flexibility that the industry hasn’t seen before.

The result that we expect to see will be a fundamental shift in how networks are built, managed and scaled for the future.

 

Shifting The Heavy Lifting To The Cloud

 

This disruption is primarily driven by the move towards software-defined networking. In the traditional setup, providers had to replace massive amounts of physical hardware from their specific vendor if they wanted to upgrade their speeds or add new features.

With Open RAN, much of that heavy lifting moves to the cloud. Operators can now mix and match the best of the batch radio units from one company with the smart software of another.

 

Strengthening Security Through Transparency

 

Some skeptics initially expressed concern that opening up network interfaces might create vulnerabilities, however the reality is leaning towards a more secure future.

Open RAN allows for a much more transparent architecture where code and protocols can be continuously audited by multiple parties. Essentially, it means that security patches could be developed and rolled out across the network in real-time, rather than needing to wait for a single vendor to release the update.

You could think of it as the network becoming a living, breathing system that evolves to stay one step ahead of potential security threats.

New disrupters like AWS, Dell, Intel, and who knows, maybe even Apple, can step up and add innovation and vision. This possible shift for operators can have potential lower costs, since as they say, competition is the best regulator.

This transition, of course, is not without challenges. All the typical concerns around integration, performance, maturity of the ecosystem and many others can be barriers to adoption. Open RAN may not fully replace the traditional providers in near term; it will definitely accelerate a move towards more open, software-driven networks and help reshape the landscape.”
