Communities across Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire are set to gain access to faster and more reliable internet as part of the D2N2 Gigahubs project. Nottinghamshire County Council has appointed Neos Networks to deliver the scheme, with Openreach and Netomnia assisting in infrastructure development.
The initiative aims to bring gigabit broadband to up to 28 public buildings in rural areas, including libraries, schools, and doctors’ surgeries. Initial survey work has already begun, and the full scheme is expected to be live by Spring 2026.
The project is funded by the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government (formerly the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities), following early investment secured through East Midlands Combined County Authority devolution negotiations in 2023. Eligibility is based on existing broadband quality, location, and whether a building is set to receive other commercial broadband upgrades.
Nottinghamshire County Councillor Keith Girling, Cabinet Member for Economic Development and Asset Management, emphasised the importance of the project:
“We are so proud to be leading this initiative. Better broadband will make a real difference for those who can’t afford or access high-speed internet at home. Whole classrooms in rural areas will be able to go online simultaneously without interruptions, and virtual field trips will help expand pupils’ learning experiences.”
David Bruce, Chief Revenue Officer at Neos Networks, highlighted the wider impact:
“Much of the UK still struggles with sub-par connectivity. This network will ensure high-speed broadband access for urban, semi-rural, and rural locations, promoting digital and social inclusion. We are excited to partner with the county council to drive new social and economic opportunities for communities.”
Sites already identified for upgrades in Nottinghamshire include Langar C of E Primary School, near Bingham, and Queen Eleanor Primary School in Harby, near Newark. Meanwhile, 22 sites across Derbyshire and Derby have also been selected, with more locations to be confirmed.
