Public sector organisations across Carmarthenshire are set to benefit from a major digital upgrade, thanks to a new £3.5 million full fibre contract awarded to fibre solutions provider ITS.
The investment is part of the Swansea Bay City Deal’s wider Digital Infrastructure Programme, aimed at creating a smarter, more connected region ready to embrace innovation and emerging technologies.
As part of the project, 41 dark fibre connections will be installed across 34 strategic sites including schools, hospitals, and local authority offices. Key partners involved include Carmarthenshire County Council, University of Wales Trinity Saint David, Hywel Dda University Health Board, and Coleg Sir Gâr.
Cllr Philip Hughes, Cabinet Member for Organisation and Workforce at Carmarthenshire County Council, said: “This marks a significant step forward in preparing our public services for the future. High-capacity, secure infrastructure is essential for supporting the growing digital needs of our communities.”
Cllr Hazel Evans added: “Not only will this upgrade improve the reliability and quality of services across the county, but it will also encourage further investment, boost innovation, and drive economic growth.”
The project also represents ITS’s first move into South Wales, reinforcing the region’s status as a growing tech hub. The dark fibre rollout supports the City Deal’s ambition to build a digitally inclusive region where no community is left behind.
