What Is Cable Internet?
Cable Internet utilises the same copper coaxial cable lines that provide cable TV, which makes it available in any area that has a cable TV service. It provides high-speed connectivity and has a download speed of anywhere between 100 and 300 megabits per second. This makes it significantly faster than DSL, and is ideal for high-quality streaming.
With cable, you can have different users in your household utilising it for different things from casual browsing or streaming. Due to its quick speed, it is more costly than DSL.
What Is DSL?
DSL uses standard copper phone lines to provide Internet connection, so it is more readily available compared to cable Internet. It does require a DSL modem for it to work, unless your computer already has an internal modem, also known as a voiceband modem.
Its speed ranges from 1 to 6 megabits per second, meaning it isn’t the fastest option on the market, but it is more cost-effective. You can choose to have your uploads and downloads symmetrical, meaning they have the same speed, or have your download speed quicker than the upload.
There are two types of DSL for this, these are ADSL and SDSL. Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) is ideal for residential households where the Internet is used by families for browsing and supports faster download speeds.
On the other hand, there is Symmetrical Digital Subscriber Line (SDSL) which caters more to businesses who need to have the same speed supported for both uploads and downloads.
Comparing Cable & DSL Speeds
You can use DSL for browsing the Internet, checking your emails and the occasional music-streaming. However, it can’t support high-quality video-streaming.
If you connect multiple devices at the same time, the connection can slow down. This makes it a much slower option compared to cable.
Because it’s widely available and more affordable, DSL tends to be the chosen option despite it being the slowest. Its speed also depends on the distance from the main source. The further away that it is, the slower the connection speed will be.
Which Option is Right For You?
If you need to stream high-quality videos or use video conferencing for work purposes, cable is the faster and more reliable option. It has a minimal lag time even if multiple devices are connected, so you don’t need to have your connection interrupted.
While it is more costly than DSL options, you may have the option to have your plan combined with your existing cable TV plan for affordability.
Cable relies on a shared bandwidth, which means that up to 40% of your connection speed can be affected during peak hours when the Internet experiences a high volume of traffic. Peak hours are usually during working hours, and if you are working remotely, you will need a connection that won’t be interrupted or slowed.
DSL is known as “always on” because it does not use a shared bandwidth, so heavy Internet traffic won’t affect your connection speed. However, if you are further away from the central hub, you are more likely to experience a weaker signal.
To assist your decision in choosing between DSL or cable, you will need to consider your environment, DSL supports rural while cable is available more in urban areas. You will need to research the pricing of both to see what best suits your budget.
Ultimately, you need to look at the factors that require the Internet connection. If you are using it for your family to use for general Internet usage, you may choose DSL however if you need it for work purposes, you may need cable instead.
For affordability purposes, DSL is generally the option to go for but if you require a high-speed Internet connection, cable is the better choice.
