For decades, millions of miles of heavy copper wire kept the hum of our global communication system humming. Copper was the king of connectivity, whether it was the landline in your kitchen or DSL in a small office. But as the world moves toward a more sustainable future, something big is happening beneath our streets and behind our walls. We are replacing the old Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) with Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP).

VoIP leverages modern internet infrastructure. Fiber-optic cables transmit data using light pulses that encounter almost no resistance. This allows them to transmit data much farther than copper, using only a fraction of the energy.
According to research, fibre-based networks (which power most VoIP) can be up to 85% more energy efficient than traditional copper-based systems. When you scale that across an entire country, the energy savings are staggering.
Dematerialisation
In the environmental movement, the term dematerialization is used. It just means using less physical stuff to deliver the same service.
With a traditional telephone system, you need to have a physical line for every single phone number. Historically, if a business wanted 50 phone lines, it needed a thick bundle of copper wires coming into the building. They also needed a big PBX (Private Branch Exchange) box, basically a huge computer in a closet, to route calls.

Copper is a touchy metal. It is sensitive to moisture, it is sensitive to electromagnetic interference and it is ageing. Legacy networks have to be maintained all the time. Every time a technician drives a diesel truck to a junction box to repair a rusted copper wire, the carbon footprint of that phone system increases.
Fibre optic cables and VoIP infrastructure are far more robust. Copper is susceptible to electrical interference, but fibre doesn’t rust. Fewer repairs mean fewer truck rolls, less replacement hardware and a longer lifecycle for the infrastructure we build.
The Recycling Challenge
One difficulty we must mention is the transition time. We rip out old copper. We are left with a massive amount of metal. The good news is that copper is very recyclable.
