Everyone needs – and expects – instant access to the Internet. Now when it comes to connectivity, it’s always been framed as a head-to-head competition between 5G wireless and Fibre Optic Cable.

But these two technologies are so fundamentally different. Can it even be considered a “race” then? Fibre is the foundation that delivers vast amounts of data with solid reliability while 5G is the fast layer that broadcasts that data straight to your devices.

So could it be considered more of a partnership? A few industry experts have weighed in on the debate.

“There will be a distinction between the label of 6G and the underlying technology; we are already seeing evolution to 5.5G from multiple vendors, so when 6G is labelled in the market it has to be different from where 5G will have finally evolved to, otherwise consumers will consider it a gimmick. As the wavelengths decrease to achieve 6G speeds there will be more attenuation effects from buildings that will interfere with its true speed. We will see a convergence of connectivity technology, with Wi-Fi covering very high-speed indoor coverage and 6G covering wider areas.

 6G will work in conjunction with 5G, and the pragmatic approach is to optimise 5G. It is genuine enhancement, an exponential step with additional technical challenges, although labelling it as 6G may make it appear as hype.

The devices have to change to take advantage of it, particularly for augmented reality use cases where large-scale upload and download are required. The 6G market is further away than vendors think; the business of running networks is transforming with cost pressures. Telecom network providers will have significant say on how this is rolled out.”

“The race really isn’t a race when looked at at the global level.  5G infrastructure is easier to deploy, generally provides higher density and reach for the investment, and in areas where growth still exists – Asia and Africa – provides better connectivity to the devices of choice among the population (primarily mobile phones and other mobile devices).  Some choices will be made for users – new devices and edge computing will require mobile 5G connectivity.

The only markets where both will likely be available as an option are the US and Europe, where the two will likely become complementary capabilities, with most households/businesses using fibre for primary connectivity and 5G (or FWA over 5G) as a backup.  Even when internet providers (such as cable companies in the US) are providing Wi-Fi-based mobile voice and data solutions, those solutions are still backed up by 5G wireless connectivity via wholesale agreements with the primary mobile operators.

The only places where 5G vs. wireline is really a tradeoff choice are in high-density urban locations (like New York City), where residential buildings may still be on old copper cables, and FWA could offer better speeds to residents.”

“Framing 5G and fibre as a race misses the whole point. Fibre is the foundation. It’s stable, high-capacity, and ideal for places where long-term infrastructure makes sense. But it’s not always practical. You can’t trench fibre to a job trailer or to a rural business without spending a fortune or waiting months. That’s where 5G fits.

5G gives you speed and flexibility. You can deploy it fast and bring a site online in a day, not a month. But the point isn’t to replace fibre, it’s to fill the gaps. A lot of companies now use both. Fibre where they can get it and 5G where they can’t.

What matters most is reliability. Downtime kills productivity and it doesn’t matter if your connection is fibre or wireless if it’s not working when you need it. That’s why we’re seeing more hybrid approaches. It’s not either-or. It’s both, depending on location, cost, and use case.

If the goal is global connectivity, the focus shouldn’t be on which tech wins. The focus should be on how fast we can connect people with something that actually works and keeps working.”

“The ongoing push between 5G and fibre is not a simple one-size-fits-all story. Fibre gives you steady, high-speed connections that don’t falter, which makes it a must for businesses and critical infrastructure. 5G, by contrast, is all about flexibility and speed at the edge like lower latency, faster response times, and mobility for the devices we use every day.

Even as 5G spreads fast, fibre still carries most of the heavy lifting behind the scenes. The smartest networks don’t pick one over the other. They use both. Fibre handles the big data flows, while 5G gets it to users quickly, wherever they are. Countries investing in this mix are the ones likely to have strong, future-ready connectivity.”

“Framing global connectivity simply as a race between 5G and fibre misses the bigger picture. The true goal isn’t universal fibre-to-the-home (FTTH); it’s universal connectivity. A one-size-fits-all approach is not the answer, especially in large, geographically diverse nations. While fibre is great for dense urban zones, it can be logistically and economically unviable for bridging connectivity gaps in many suburban and rural areas.

“This is where 5G, through fixed wireless access (FWA), becomes a critical complementary technology, not a competitor. FWA uses 5G coverage to provide high-speed internet to areas where fibre hasn’t arrived, or where it’s just too costly to deploy to every home. After all, it’s far more cost-effective to lay fibre to a single 5G tower serving hundreds of households than to wire each house individually.

“Ultimately, achieving true connectivity requires a multi-technology strategy. Its success hinges on a patchwork of solutions – which combines FTTH, FWA, and even low earth orbit (LEO) satellites for the most remote communities – tailored to the specific economic and logistical realities of each region.”

“5G and fibre are both vital for national connectivity, but each has clear trade-offs that
policymakers and operators must weigh. Fibre, offering near-unlimited bandwidth and long infrastructure life, is the gold standard for speed and stability. However, it’s costly and slow to deploy, often leaving rural areas behind. Governments pushing “fibre everywhere” risk tying up capital where population density doesn’t justify it.

5G promises flexibility and faster rollout, delivering broadband where fibre is
uneconomic while supporting mobility and IoT applications. However, in practice, 5G
performance rarely reaches the maximum speed advertised. High frequencies mean
shorter range and more cell sites needed, driving up costs. Often, 5G still depends
heavily on fibre backhaul. Calling it a full alternative to fibre is misleading. Where 5G
can really make a difference is bringing fast connections to areas where rolling out
fixed-line fibre broadband has been impossible.

A key question is “Can 5G be an alternative to fibre?” – but this misses the point. The
real answer is that they can be complementary, because a country needs both. Fibre
should form the core network, connect key hubs and highly populated areas, while
5G should fill gaps, add mobility and support emerging digital industries.”

“While the global race between 5G and fibre is often discussed in terms of speed and bandwidth, the real contest is about inclusion. Both technologies have the potential to reshape access to opportunity, but only if the digital rollout addresses the structural gaps that still leave start-ups (especially rural and disadvantaged founders) offline or under-connected.

According to Ofcom, around 6% of UK premises still cannot access full-fibre, and 13% of rural areas experience speeds below 30 Mbps. For early-stage entrepreneurs, that digital lag translates directly into lost productivity, stalled innovation, and reduced competitiveness.

At Just Starting Out Ltd, we surveyed over 1,200 aspiring professionals and found that 17% had delayed launching their business due to unreliable connectivity. Meanwhile, 5G access has opened new pathways for mobile-first enterprises, remote customer service, and cloud-based collaboration- provided that cost and coverage don’t become the next inequality frontier.

In the long term, fibre may offer stability, but 5G represents agility. The future of global connectivity lies not in choosing one over the other, but in ensuring both advance with equal attention to affordability, reach, and user empowerment.”
