BT has signed a £9.8 million contract to deliver high-speed full fibre broadband to nearly 1,800 homes and businesses across the Swansea Bay City Region. The new broadband rollout is part of the Better Broadband Infill Project, led by the Swansea Bay City Deal’s Digital Infrastructure Programme and delivered in partnership with Openreach.
The project will focus on places that currently have poor internet speeds (less than 30Mbps) and are not already included in any other government or private broadband plans. These areas are often rural and difficult to reach, making broadband installation more expensive.
Thanks to BT’s additional investment, the total value of the project will rise to over £10 million. It will bring fast broadband to 1,533 premises and another 256 sites across Carmarthenshire, Neath Port Talbot, Pembrokeshire, and Swansea.
The project will start in May 2025 and will be rolled out in six phases. The first 220 properties are expected to be connected by December 2025, with the entire project finished by March 31, 2027.
Councillor Rob Stewart, Leader of Swansea Council and Chair of the Swansea Bay City Deal joint committee, said: “This project is a game-changer. Reliable broadband is essential for daily life, and this will help improve people’s lives and create more opportunities for local businesses and communities.”
