Brits who rely on their landline no longer need to worry about losing their home phone or internet during power outages, thanks to a new broadband battery backup device.
Launched by Vodafone, BT, KCOM, and Zen Internet, this compact and easy-to-install device provides up to seven hours of power, ensuring uninterrupted connectivity during blackouts. Unlike traditional backup systems, which are often bulky and noisy, this new gadget is lightweight and user-friendly.
The device seamlessly switches from mains power to battery during an outage, keeping broadband and landlines active without interruption. Depending on the router and usage, it offers between four and seven hours of backup. It also features an emergency mode that reserves 25% of the battery life, ensuring users still have power if a blackout occurs overnight.
Developed in collaboration with Wire Technologies, Vodafone will distribute the device free of charge to customers who are landline-dependent. Others can purchase it for £150. This initiative aligns with Ofcom regulations, which require telecom providers to offer solutions that keep vulnerable users connected for at least an hour during power cuts—Vodafone’s device far exceeds this standard.
UK Telecoms and Data Minister Chris Bryant praised the initiative, saying, “Innovative solutions like Vodafone’s broadband battery backup provide peace of mind to landline-dependent customers, ensuring they stay connected when they need it most.”
With the UK set to phase out traditional PSTN landlines by early 2027 in favour of VoIP and FTTP services, broadband will become the primary fixed connection for homes. This makes reliable backup power more important than ever, especially during emergencies.
The UK’s electricity grid is generally stable, but severe weather events, such as Storm Darragh, have caused significant disruptions. A 2023 UKPower report found that nearly 66% of Brits experienced a local power outage, with 23% reporting these occur almost annually.
The device is made from 95% recycled plastic, reinforcing Vodafone’s commitment to sustainability. It will also be offered wholesale to other telecom providers, ensuring more people can benefit from this technology.
Rob Winterschladen, Consumer Director at Vodafone UK, emphasised the company’s dedication to keeping customers connected: “As we approach the PSTN switch-off in 2027, safeguarding landline-dependent users is a priority. Our industry-leading broadband battery backup ensures peace of mind and uninterrupted connectivity.”
With this new backup device, vulnerable individuals can rest easy knowing they will remain connected, even in the event of a power outage.
